In December 1999, Theresa Heater pleaded guilty to pouring a caustic substance down the feeding tube of her then 13-month-old son who had a tracheotomy tube to facilitate his breathing and a gastrointestinal tube through which he was fed. Heater said she "snapped" and "lost control" of her actions. But, today, the 28-year old claims claims she was "forced" to plead guilty by an attorney and that there is new evidence which "proves" she is innocent. So, Heater, who is not scheduled to be released until December 2014, is asking Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) to commute her 18-year prison to time served. Blagojevich rejected clemency petitions from her in 2003 and 2006 (Illinois prisoners can re-apply for clemency one year after being denied). Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz and several in-laws are opposing clemency with some enthusiasm. See full story in the News-Gazette (here).
