The President: Criticism

The National Center for Public Policy Research has posted a "press release" which notes the chairman of the Project 21 leadership network is condemning President Bush's recent set of presidential pardons because it includes "drug smugglers, an embezzler and others" but not Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, who have been in prison since January of 2007. Mychal Massie says President Bush's "stolid refusal" to pardon Ramos and Compean is a "most unconscionable act of disloyalty." He also says Bush's inaction sends "a disturbing signal" to those who protect our borders and has a negative impact on "the morale of those serving overseas." Ramos and Compean pursued one Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila who abandoned a van containing a millions dollars worth of marijuana. While in pursuit, Ramos shot Aldrete-Davila in the buttock, believing Aldrete-Davila had drawn a gun of his own. The press release also claims a fellow agent who testified against Ramos and Compean is a life-long friend of Aldrete-Davila. See press release here.
