Texas: Legislators Calling for Clemency

Bob Ray Sanders has an editorial at calling for the commutation of the death sentence of Jeffery Lee Wood. Wood was not tried with his co-defendant, one Reneau, who was found guilty of murder and has already been executed. A clemency petition that has been submitted to the governor and the Board of Pardons and Paroles thus complains that the State seeks to execute Wood "for the same crime, even though the State does not contend that Mr. Wood shot [the victim]. In fact, Mr. Wood was not even in the building when Reneau shot and killed [the victim]." Sanders reports that the petition also raises the issue of whether or not Wood was mentally competent to stand trial and that "at least 10 state legislators have written the Board of Pardons and Paroles, urging clemency for Wood." After discussing these and other aspects of the case, Sanders concludes, "It is clear that Wood does not deserve to be executed." See story here.
