Ohio.com reports Gov. Ted Strickland today denied clemency for 51-year old Richard Wade Cooey, who is scheduled for execution next Tuesday. Cooey was convicted of multiple rape and murder in 1986. In recent months, he has argued that his 270 pound frame and migraine headache medication complicate the ability to carry out his execution in a humane fashion. A statement from the Governor said he and his "staff" considered the application, but denied it on the basis of "proceedings, evidence, judicial decisions, Cooey's application for executive clemency, arguments for and against clemency and the unanimous recommendation against clemency by the Ohio Parole Board."
