Joseph Ries is to be executed on Tuesday. He says he was "on drugs" when he broke into a home in Texas, committed murder and stole a car. Indeed, in prison, he said he did not even remember committing the murder. There is also evidence of a long history of physical and sexual abuse as a child. But a jury took about 7 minutes to convict him and, more recently, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously rejected his request for clemency. Ries' attorney says his client got "the short end of the stick from the state at every possible level ... We've got a system that's broken and at every level it's been broken for him." See story here.
