The Chicago Tribune reports that Chicago alderman Ed Smith is seeking a pardon for a friend, former alderman Larry Bloom, who represented Hyde Park and other South Side neighborhoods. In 1998, Bloom pleaded guilty to a tax charge stemming from the FBI's Operation Silver Shovel corruption probe. He also admitted to accepting bribes in exchange for helping a mob associate's "alleged business interests." Smith, however, says Bloom has paid his debt. See complete story here.
