Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Martin Elechi, has pardon to 13 prison inmates from Ebonyi State. Two additional prisoners had death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Most of the prisoners had served substantial part of their sentences for minor offences such as stealing of farm produce and selling of Indian hemp. The Attorney-General of the state and Commissioner for Justice told newsmen the gesture was a Christmas and New Year gift to the inmates with the expectation that they would reciprocate with a positive change of heart. He also expressed hope that those who learned meaningful trades while in prison would see the gesture as an opportunity to turn a new leaf but and become useful and responsible citizens of the country. "I also hope that it will make them preach to other persons, the attitudinal change which the state government is currently preaching,” he said. See story here.
