Lauren Ritchie has a feisty piece in the Oralando Sentinel which argues 48-year old Robert Schmidt is not (or should not be) a candidate for clemency. Ritchie says death seems "the more appropriate alternative" for "a guy who blew one guy's head off, shot the second in the back and threw their bodies weighted with concrete blocks into a sinkhole to cover up cattle rustling." A co-defendent in the case was orginally sentenced to death, then given two life sentences. Nonetheless, Schmidt's application will have a hearing before the Board of Executive Clemency this week. It will note his cooperation with prosecutors, his performance in "appliance school," the fact that he earned his GED and his involvement in Jaycees See full piece here.
