New York: Pardon for Soldier

27-year old Osvaldo Hernandez had a gun possession conviction that barred him from joining the New York Police Department, at least until today, when he was pardoned by Governor Paterson. General Peter W. Chiarelli says Hernandez was an “exemplary soldier” and supported his application for clemency. The Times notes that, in the past, police officials "have argued that no matter how exemplary an applicant, the city’s administrative code forbids hiring anyone with a felony conviction as a police officer." Paterson says Hernandez "has demonstrated that individuals can turn their lives around and that we need not let our mistakes define us.” See story here.
