The Chicago Tribune / WGN report there is a "renewed clemency effort" aimed at securing a commutation of sentence for former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who is said to have "health problems." Ryan's wife is also reported to have a "terminal lung disease" and is "on oxygen 24 hours a day." She notes President Obama "knows" her husband "well." Ryan's attorney, former Illinois Governor Jim Thompson emphasizes that the effort is intended for mere release and not a pardon. Last we recall, Ryan was not admitting any degree of guilt.
