More Mercy in Pakistan than in D.C.

President Asif Ali Zardari is "celebrating" the "national achievement" of "democratising" by granting a remission of prison sentences under Article 45 of the Constitution (on the advice of the prime minister). Total remissions were given to female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above or served one-third of substantive sentences imprisonment. Male prisoners 65 years of age or above who have served at least one-third of their sentences have also been given a total remission. Not covered in the act: those guilty of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, terrorism, kidnapping and abduction for ransom, robbery and dacoity. See story here.
