Burundi: 1,300 Commutations of Sentence

It is reported that more than 1,300 "non-political" individuals will be released from the prisons of Burundi. The commutations of sentence (called "remissions") are said to be "mostly" for prisoners over 60 years of age, those suffering from "terminal diseases" and breastfeeding or pregnant women. A spokesman of the Ministry of Justice says the pardons are part of efforts to reduce overcrowded prisons. More than 4,000 prisoners were released in Burundi earlier this year. See story here.
