Tanzania: 3,000 Pardons!

It is reported that Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has pardoned more than 3,000 prisoners, "mostly those convicted of minor offences and the sick." The pardons are said to be in honor of the "47th anniversary of the union between mainland Tanzania, previously known as Tanganyika, and Zanzibar." Among those pardoned are prisoners suffering from serious ailments, prisoners who are over 70 years of age, and prisoners who are pregnant or are breast-feeding women. Many others are serving sentences of less than five years for "minor offenses" or have served at least a quarter of their sentence. Minister Nahodha says, "It is our hope that after being released, they will work hard to contribute to the development of the nation and lead decent lives." See story here.
