Illinois: Lipstick Killer

83-year old William Heirens, a.k.a. the “Lipstick Killer” has died, after spending more than 65 years in prison. Heirens, a 17-year old enginerring major at the University of Chicago student, confessed to the murders of Josephine Ross, Frances Brown and Suzanne Degnan, but later claimed that he was coerced into doing so, and did so only to save his own life (via three consecutive life sentences).

Heirens recanted his "confession" soon afterward and maintained his innocence for the rest of his life. The Times reports he was "denied parole or clemency numerous times," in 2002, with assistance from the Northwestern University Center on Wrongful Convictions.

Heirens also became the "first prisoner in Illinois to earn a degree from a four-year college." He also "managed the prison garden factory and set up several education programs." See story here.
